15 Journal Prompts to Help You Find Yourself

We all go through moments when life just feels so empty. It’s like we are simply going through the motions of our lives on autopilot, disconnected from everything.

I went through the same thing a couple of years back. There’s no denying that life can easily feel too overwhelming. I was going through so many problems, juggling work and other responsibilities, and on top of that, I was constantly stressed about making ends meet.

I was so caught up in everything that was going on in life that I’ve allowed myself to just focus on making my life better. I believed that my energy was better spent on finding solutions to my problems, working harder and just pushing myself to simply get through the day. I did this for years without realizing that little by little, I was losing myself.

I get up and do everything that I needed to do and yet I felt so empty and unhappy. I honestly believed that I had to put my goals and interests on hold and wait for everything to be okay before I could start focusing on my needs again.

If you are doing this too, please allow me to tell you that you don’t have to wait for your struggles and problems to disappear before you can start finding yourself again.

I’ve learned that if we keep waiting for everything in our lives to fall into place before we reconnect with ourselves, our wants, and our goals, we are not only wasting so much time but we are also missing out on the opportunity to enjoy the little things that make life meaningful.

Please know that you can still allow yourself to make your dreams a reality, discover new things, and enjoy life even when it is not perfect. You are allowed to reconnect with yourself and find your spark again even if you are going through struggles.

Please don’t be afraid to make room for yourself again. One of the things that truly helped me reconnect with myself was journaling.

Journaling gave me this avenue to reflect on what I truly want and who I want to become without any fear of being judged. It gave me this safe space to be completely honest with myself and acknowledge the feelings and thoughts that I have been pushing aside for so long.

In this blog post, I will share with you the journal prompts that helped me reconnect with myself and find my spark and drive again. I have separated these questions into three categories to make the process a little easier and also help you reflect on different areas of your life.

Before You Begin:

Before you start answering these questions, please remember that there is no right or wrong way. You can answer them in any way that you want. You don’t have to worry about spelling or grammar. You don’t have to worry about finding the right answers.

Don’t interrupt your thoughts just to fix something. Just write. It’s okay if your ideas are all over the place. Remember that you are doing this just for you. The important thing here is just to be truly honest with yourself in answering these questions.

Here are 15 Journal Prompts That Will Help You Find Yourself

Reconnecting with the person you are now

The questions in this category will help you reflect on who you are now. Often, we may have the notion that we need to still have the same goals, passion, and interest we’ve had years ago. We think that we need to hold on to this version of ourselves because letting it go would mean that we have failed or that there is something wrong with us.

But that’s certainly not the case. Please remember that just like everything else in this world, we are also continually changing and growing. Just because we are not the person we used to be doesn’t mean that this version of ourselves is any less worthy.

You need to stop putting so much pressure on yourself to become the person you used to be and take this opportunity to get to know that person that you are today.

What parts of myself have I neglected lately?

What qualities do I appreciate most about myself, and how can I embrace them more often?

What have I been doing out of habit rather than because it genuinely makes me happy?

Which parts of my daily routine make me feel fulfilled, and which ones leave me feeling disconnected from myself?

What are some things I genuinely enjoy doing, even when nobody else is around to see or appreciate them?

Reflect on what’s been holding you back

When we follow the same routines and habits for a long time, it’s easy to miss the fact that some of these routines, beliefs, and habits are no longer contributing to our growth and happiness. The questions in this category will help you recognize the things that are keeping you stuck and unhappy.

When answering these questions please don’t be too hard on yourself. Don’t beat yourself up for your mistakes. Remember that the goal here is not to judge or blame yourself, it is to give you an opportunity to reflect and become more aware of the habits that you need to break, the relationships that are keeping you stuck, and the beliefs that are keeping you from growing.

What negative beliefs about myself have I allowed to influence the decisions I make?

In what areas of my life do I feel stuck, and what do I think is keeping me there?

What mistakes from my past am I still holding against myself?

Are there habits or routines that keep me comfortable but prevent me from growing?

If I could let go of one thing that’s been weighing me down, what would it be, and how might my life feel without it?

Discover What Truly Matters to You And Imagine The Life You Want

For the longest time, I was guilty of holding on to goals and dreams that I never wanted but assumed that they were the things that I was supposed to have.

I look at other people’s lives and tell myself that that’s the life that I want but if I’m perfectly honest with myself, I was only choosing to build that life because I thought that those were the things that would make me look successful and would make the people that I love proud.

But along the way, I’ve realized that if I continue building a life based on what other people want, regardless of how many goals I achieve, those would still not be enough and I would still feel empty. Because at the end of the day, no amount of success can ever truly make you feel fulfilled if you’re constantly chasing the things that really don’t matter to you.

I know that often, it can be hard to choose the things that we truly want because we have already been so conditioned by society that there is only one way to live a successful and meaningful life. Like there’s supposed to be a blueprint that we need to follow for our lives to be meaningful.

But that’s certainly not the case. You are allowed to build a life that YOU truly want. The questions in these categories will help you figure out what truly matters to you and what life you truly want to live.

If I could design a life that genuinely makes me happy, what would it look like?

What does living a meaningful and fulfilling life mean to me personally?

If money, fear, and other people’s opinions weren’t holding me back, what would I want to do with my life?

What experiences do I want to have, places do I want to visit, and memories do I want to create in the coming years?

What dreams have I put aside because I convinced myself they were unrealistic or out of reach?

What to Do After Answering These Journal Prompts

Now that you have answered all the questions and you have taken the time to reflect on different areas of your life. The next step would be to put all those realizations into practice. Please remember that you don’t have to completely change your life overnight.

You don’t have to push yourself to make drastic changes. The important thing here is not to overwhelm yourself to the point that you just end up feeling discouraged. Give yourself permission to start small. Read your answers and start by choosing one or two things to prioritize.

Just focus on those two things. If you feel like you can tackle another one, go ahead and just slowly work on that one too.

Final Thoughts

Having the courage to admit to ourselves that we are lost, stuck, and unhappy is definitely not easy. It takes courage to acknowledge that this is not the life that we want and even greater courage to start doing something about it.

So please, give yourself a huge pat in the back. The fact that you’re actually taking the necessary steps to change your life and finding yourself already speaks volumes about your strength and self awareness.

Before I end this post, I want to remind you that throughout this journey of reconnecting to yourself, please don’t be too hard on yourself. This process is not easy and there will always be days when you feel like you are not making any progress or you are just reverting to old habits.

During those days, please don’t hesitate to give yourself grace. Remind yourself that true progress doesn’t follow a straight line. There will be good days and bad days. The important thing is you don’t give up on yourself.

Remind yourself that you have within you the power to change your life, to find your spark again, and finally be happy. Please always remember that I’m rooting for you.
