There’s no denying that life can be unpredictable and some days might feel more challenging and overwhelming than others. Thankfully, there are simple yet powerful steps we can take to shape our days positively and help us make today a good day.

I know how easy it is to get drowned in the chaos, noise, and demands of life and before we even know it, we are just going through the everyday motions of life on autopilot. I’m definitely guilty of this.

For the longest time, I was trapped in a cycle of moving forward, fulfilling all responsibilities and tasks without any sense of meaning or purpose. Every day felt hallow and empty. Then life suddenly hit me with a curveball that ultimately led to my rock bottom.

When I was at my lowest, it felt like having a great day was next to impossible. I mean, how can you even make today a great day when everything seems to keep falling apart and you are faced with one problem after another without even giving yourself a chance to breathe?

But one of the greatest lessons that I’ve learned while I was navigating my lowest point is that choosing to make today a good day is not about ignoring the challenges and pretending that everything is okay.

It is about finding hope, strength, and resilience in the midst of adversities. It is about taking small steps and making small changes that’ll help lift our spirits and boost our motivation and determination to keep pushing.

You have to remind yourself that no matter where you are in your journey, with every new day, you have the power within you to create a day that radiates kindness, greatness, and love.

In this post, I will be sharing small steps that you can take that’ll have a huge impact in helping you make today a great day and every day after that. These are the steps that have tremendously helped me find joy, hope, and positivity even in the darkest moments of my life. I’m hoping that it will do the same for you.

Make Today A Good Day 1

How To Make Today A Good Day

1. Set Achievable Goals And Celebrate Your Progress

Most of us are guilty of wanting to do everything all at once. Especially when we have so many things on our plate and we want to see huge improvements right away, it’s easy to push ourselves to exhaustion and burnout trying to accomplish everything.

I was definitely one of those people and one of the things that I’ve learned from it is that continuously pushing ourselves to do everything all at once will only lead to so much stress and frustration. It doesn’t only push us to burn out easily but it also greatly harms the quality of our work and our productivity.

That’s why an important key in helping us make today a good day is by learning to set clear and doable goals. When we set realistic goals, we are giving ourselves a clear path to follow which makes us more focused and determined. And as you check those goals off your list, make sure to celebrate each milestone, big or small.

Doing this does not only help us acknowledge our capabilities and boost our confidence. But it also helps lighten our moods and lift our spirits regardless of how busy our days are.

Remember that it’s perfectly okay to tackle one thing at a time. There’s nothing wrong with taking small steps. By learning to prioritize task, we are avoiding a great deal of stress, disappointment, and chaos.

2. Take A Few Moments To Meditate

I was never a believer in how much meditation can positively impact our day and well-being. I have always assumed that when I have a million different worries and negative thoughts running through my mind all day, taking the time to sit with those thoughts is just not a good idea.

I thought that the purpose of meditating was to block all my thoughts and just empty my mind and I know that doing that for me was definitely impossible. But I was wrong.

Meditation is not about emptying our minds. It is about acknowledging our thoughts and worries without letting them consume us and sweep us away. It is like hitting the pause button on the noise of everything around you.

Yes, you may find yourself drifting from one thought to another, and that’s perfectly okay and completely normal. Just keep going, every time you recognize your mind being swept away by your worries, gently pull your attention away from it and focus on the present moment. Focus on your breath.

By allowing yourself a few moments every day to meditate, you give yourself the chance to step back from the chaos of life, breathe, reset, and relax.

Try taking 10-15 minutes to meditate every morning for the next 30 days. Doing this will help you see how much a small thing can create such a huge impact on your mindset and well-being. Plus doing this every morning also helps set a positive tone for the entire day.

3. Practice Gratitude

Practicing daily gratitude can have such a huge impact on helping us make today a great day and every day after that. I know that you’ve probably heard the phrase “Be grateful” more than a dozen times.

And I know how frustrating it can be to hear especially when you’re going through so much and when everything around you is just falling apart, you know that being grateful is just impossible.

I was certainly guilty of this. When I was navigating the lowest point of my life, practicing daily gratitude was just not possible.

I mean, how can I find something to be grateful for when everything around me was just going from bad to worse, and every day I was hit with one problem after another?

So, instead of practicing gratitude. I took the opposite way. I’ve allowed myself to focus on everything that was going wrong and on all my problems thinking that by doing this, I was keeping myself more accountable and motivated. But that was certainly not the case.

It just made me irritable and to be honest it just made me feel so much worse. By choosing to focus on the negative things, I was making myself more and more hopeless every single day.

I’ve learned that practicing daily gratitude is not about invalidating what we are currently going through or minimizing the problems that we’re facing.

It is about choosing to believe that though times are difficult right now, there is hope and we still have plenty of things that we should be thankful for that we just so easily take for granted. It doesn’t matter how big or small they are.

Start by writing down 3 things that you are grateful for every day for the next 30 days. Do this when you wake up and before you go to bed and you’ll see how this small change can make such a positive impact on our outlook in life.

4. Don’t Be Afraid To Take Breaks

In today’s world, it’s so easy to believe that the key to a happy life is to always hustle and consistently push ourselves regardless of how exhausted and burn out we already feel.

There’s no denying that working hard is important but let’s not forget that allowing ourselves to slow down and take a break is just as vital. It’s easy to get overwhelmed and stressed when we have so many things on our to-do-list.

I used to think that taking breaks was a complete waste of time, especially when you have so many things to do but I was completely wrong. Taking breaks will not slow us down, it actually does the complete opposite.

When we work non-stop, slowly our focus and productivity will fade. But when we allow ourselves to take short breaks, it’s like giving ourselves a chance to recharge and refresh. By doing this, we are allowing ourselves to come back more focused, driven, and a whole lot more productive.

5. Practice Self Compassion And Forgive Yourself For Any Mistakes

It’s easy to become our worst critic. Sometimes most of us fall into the habit of constantly criticizing ourselves for every little detail and beating ourselves for even the smallest mistake. I am no stranger to this feeling.

For years, I believed that by constantly beating myself up and criticizing every little detail of my life, I was keeping myself more accountable and I was preventing things from going wrong.

I didn’t realize that by doing this, slowly I was weakening my self-worth and confidence. Constantly putting myself down only made me doubt myself and my capabilities. It made me more afraid to pursue something that I want believing that I don’t have what it takes to achieve it.

Please know that you deserve to give yourself the amount of love, kindness, and understanding that you so freely give to others. Being your worst critic and constantly putting yourself down will only make you feel worse.

Know that human as we are, we all make mistakes. We all fail and you’re definitely not an exemption to that. Learn to embrace your imperfections and please remember that you are worthy of love, kindness, and forgiveness.

Make today a good day by practicing self compassion. Be kind, understanding, and patient with yourself, and watch how it transforms your day into a more fulfilling and joyful experience.

6. Reflect On Your Past Accomplishments And Recognize Your Strength And Courage

Life can easily get overwhelming. We all have days when we are faced with one problem after another. Days, when we feel like everything in our lives is just going from bad to worse.

During those days, one of the things that can instantly help change my perspective and lift my spirits is by reflecting on my past accomplishments and all the times that I was able to overcome my lowest days.

Remembering what you’ve achieved in the past and seeing just how far you’ve come, will remind you of your capabilities. It will make you see just how amazing and strong you are.

Reflect on all the tough stuff that you have overcome. Doing this will remind you of your strength and make you see that regardless of whatever life throws at you, you have what it takes to overcome those obstacles. So don’t give up and just keep going.

7. Do A Digital Detox For A Few Hours

Regardless of how much we deny it, being constantly glued to our screens can often be mentally draining. Sometimes instead of helping us easily connect with other people, it can lead to us disconnecting from the people that we love the most.

This is why doing a digital detox even for a few hours a day is a vital key in helping us make every day more meaningful and fulfilling. But let’s face it, we are already so attached to our screens that often taking a break from it every day can be difficult.

Remember the key to incorporating this habit into your daily routine is all about finding what works for you. The best thing to do is to start small and gradually increase the duration of your digital detox.

Designate a few certain hours every day for this. I usually do an hour in the morning, an hour in the evening, and an hour and 30 minutes before I go to bed.

You can use this no-screen time to spend meaningful time with the people that you love or you can spend it walking outside and giving your mind a chance to breathe and refresh. Just remember to be patient with yourself while you’re incorporating this new habit into your daily routine.

8. Avoid Complaining All The Time

I know that we all have those days when everything in our lives just seems to go wrong. Days when our patience and strength are tested. During those days it’s so easy to allow ourselves to focus only on the negative and complain about everything bad in our lives.

Now, I’m not saying that complaining is a bad thing. I know that it can be therapeutic and it can be a way for us to vent and release stress and anger.

But the problem really starts when we allow ourselves to complain about every little thing. I was certainly guilty of this. When I was navigating my lowest point, I complained about every little problem and every little inconvenience.

Doing this was no longer therapeutic. It was only making me bitter and irritable. It didn’t help improve my situation in any way, sometimes it just made it worse. It just made me feel angry and hopeless.

Constantly complaining does not only drain your energy but it also adds unnecessary stress to your day. When you learn to refrain from complaining too much, you are allowing yourself the space to create a more positive and hopeful atmosphere around you and a chance to make every day count.

9. Embrace The Power Of Kindness

In a world filled with hate and overwhelmed by negativity, be the change and let kindness be your superpower everywhere you go. Being kind and spreading love and compassion is an important ingredient in helping you make today a good day.

Every day, do the best that you can to make someone smile with a simple act of kindness. Remember that being kind is not just about grand gestures. Know that little acts of kindness can also truly make a huge difference.

It’s not only about extravagant efforts. Remember that the beauty of kindness truly lies in its sincerity. Your everyday small acts of kindness can create such a huge ripple of goodness in the world.

So please don’t hesitate to make the world a better place, one act of kindness at a time.

10. Focus On The Present Moment

Are you also guilty of spending so much time and energy worrying about the future or thinking about the past? I certainly have.

I can’t tell you how much time and energy I’ve spent ruminating about all the what-ifs of life. I spent so much time worrying excessively about certain things that may not even happen in the future.

And let me tell you, doing that was just so emotionally and mentally draining. While there’s no denying that planning and a healthy amount of reflection are natural and can often be helpful, excessive rumination about the future or the past will rob us of the chance of enjoying every moment of our lives.

Life is far too precious to waste it constantly worrying about the future or holding on to the past. Time is fleeting and instead of spending most of our time living in a different timeline, let’s break free from that habit and start focusing on the present moment so that we can finally live every moment of our lives.

By learning to focus on the present moment, we are giving ourselves the chance to create a more meaningful and fulfilling experience every single day. It gives us the perfect opportunity to make today a great day and every day beyond.

Here’s a great post from Verywell Mind that’ll help you learn how to focus on the present moment.

11. End Your Day By Doing Something That Nourishes Your Soul

This is another important step in helping us make every day a good day. Ending your day by doing something that nourishes your soul is a great way to let yourself know that you too deserve love and care.

This means taking even just a little time before going to bed to do something that makes your heart happy, calms your mind, and brings you inner peace.

We all know that there are days that will be more difficult and stressful than others. Days when our to-do list just seems never ending to the point that when we get home, there are still so many things that we have to cross off our to-do list. During those days, it’s easy to just put this off and just focus on the things that we have to do.

That’s definitely understandable. While it may not always be possible to dedicate a significant amount of time to this, know that even small moments can make a difference. It can be as simple as reading a few pages of the book that you have been wanting to finish, or spending two minutes taking deep breaths.

Remember that doing something that nourishes your soul doesn’t have to be time-consuming. It is about finding even the smallest moment to recharge, relax, and just breathe.

Final Thoughts

Making today a good day is definitely not an elusive thing or just a fleeting wish, it is a conscious choice that we can make every morning. While we certainly cannot control everything around us, we can definitely control how we react to it and how we can make the most of it.

Yes, we may encounter problems and setbacks but please know that those do not define your ability and your worth. They are just temporary detours and what matter is how you handle them.

Remember that you have what it takes to face any obstacles that life throws at you. You are strong, capable, and resilient.

Know that it’s not about waiting for the perfect day to come. It is about finding beauty, hope, and joy even in those imperfect days. Embrace the journey and cherish every moment of your life!
